Chaos breaks out in NYC as gunman goes on deadly shooting rampage: Live updates


Chaos has descended in New York City after a gunman seen carrying a large assault rifle opened fire inside a Midtown skyscraper, killing an officer and four others.

The unidentified gunman was seen wearing a sport coat and button-down shirt while carrying the large rifle near the office building that houses Blackstone asset management and the NFL on Monday evening.

He then opened fire inside the lobby at around 6.30pm, with approximately 30 people inside before he reportedly took his own life. 

Officer Didarul Islam, who was working private security at the time, was killed in the attack as were four others.

Photos show weapon used in the attack

Photos shared to social media showed the assault rifle that gunman Shane Tamura used in the attack.

It was manufactured by Palmetto State Armory and appears to have been modified with a scope, flashlight, and tactical sling.

Blood could also be seen on the hilt of the weapon.

Office workers barricaded themselves with couches

Office workers inside 365 Park Avenue barricaded themselves inside when the gunfire started, photos posted online show.

They show couches piled up beside a door to prevent the gunman from gaining entry.

Another photo showed employees adding even more pieces of furniture to the stack.

Gunman Shane Tamura was then found dead on the 33rd floor of the building.

What we know about the gunman Shane Tamura

The man who unleashed chaos inside a Midtown Manhattan office tower on Monday afternoon has been identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old licensed private investigator from Las Vegas who once dreamed of a life in football.

Authorities say Tamura arrived in Manhattan by car on Monday and walked into 345 Park Avenue in the heart of Midtown Manhattan with a concealed weapon permit issued by the Las Vegas Sheriff’s Department.

Shooter reportedly exchanged gunfire with cops inside the building

Shooter Shane Tamura exchanged gunfire with police officers inside the skyscraper at around 6.40pm, law enforcement officials told CNN.

At that point, the gunman fled upstairs and the NYPD started receiving calls about a shooting on the 32 and 33 floors, before they found Tamura dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Socialist New York City Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani said he was ‘heartbroken’ by the news of the mass shooting.

‘I’m heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts,’ he wrote on X.

‘Grateful for all of our first responders on the ground.’

Shooter identified as Shane Tamura

The shooter has been identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, of Las Vegas, who had a concealed carry permit and previously worked as a private investigator, according to CNN.

A motive for the shooting remains unclear, though NBC New York reports police are probing the possibility the former high school football star was targeting the National Football League headquarters inside.

Dozens of police officers seen entering building

Video shared online showed dozens of police officers, wearing protective gear, entering the midtown Manhattan office building that houses Blackstone asset management and the NFL on Monday.

They later found the gunman dead on the 33rd floor of 365 Park Avenue.

Four victims now confirmed dead

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that at least four victims have succumbed to their injuries from the shooting.

Among those who were killed was Police Officer Didarul Islam, who was working private security at the time.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams at the scene

New York City Mayor Eric Adams took to X to share that he is at the scene of the deadly shooting in midtown Manhattan.

He asked those inside the building to remain where they were as officers go floor-to-floor inside the skyscraper.

‘People have been shot and injured, and I will soon be going to the hospital,’ he said.
