Pubs give Labour’s red tape the red card over squeeze on brewery sector
Labour has been accused of ‘concocting harebrained ideas’ from an ‘ivory tower’, as red tape and soaring energy costs squeeze the brewery sector.
As pubs prepare for a World Cup boost this month, the industry wants support similar to that given to other struggling sectors such as steel, and a slowdown in Net Zero policies.
Sambrook’s Brewery founder Duncan Sambrook said ministers were imposing changes without consultation and warned a rapid shift from oil and gas would cause ‘economic pain’.

Sambrook said brewers had faced a ‘fairly relentless’ series of challenges, now being made worse by a barrage of red tape.
‘I think that [ministers] sit in an ivory tower concocting harebrained ideas [for brewing and hospitality] and then want to impose them on a sector without any consultation,’ he said.
