Paris 2024 Olympics LIVE: Team GB target medals in athletics and swimming after gender

The Netherlands have won the 4x400m mixed relay final after pipping Team USA, who set a new world record earlier this week.

Femke Bol produced a superb final leg to overtake the USA’s Kaylyn Brown just before the finish line.

Team GB quartet Samuel Reardon, Laviai Nielsen, Alex Haydock-Wilson and Amber Anning took the bronze.

Lewis Richardson has reached the semi-finals of the men’s welterweight (71kg) event after beating Jordan’s Zeyad Eashash via a split decision.

Richardson is now guaranteed at least a bronze medal.

The first gold medal of tonight’s swimming session goes to Kristof Milak of Hungary, who wins the men’s 100m butterfly.

He finished in a time of 49.90 seconds, ahead of Canadian duo Josh Liendo and Ilya Kharun.

Liendo claimed silver in 49.99 seconds, while Kharun took bronze in 50.45 seconds.

Adam Peaty will not represent Team GB in tonight’s mixed 4x100m relay final.

Britain’s line-up will instead consist of Kathleen Dawson, James Wilby, Anna Hopkin and Duncan Scott.

Peaty returned to the pool this morning for the first time since his positive COVID test and he helped Britain qualify for Sunday’s men’s 4x100m medley final.

However, he said afterwards that this had been the worst physical week of his life.

He also revealed that he has been struggling with an ear infection.

Spain are through to the semi-finals of the women’s football tournament after beating Colombia on penalties.

Colombia had been 2-0 up but Spain netted twice, including a 97th-minute equaliser to force extra time.

La Roja eventually prevailed 4-2 on spot-kicks and will now face either France or Brazil in the semi-finals.

She’s through to the final following an excellent race, placing second behidn Jamaica’s Tia Clayton!

Speaking to BBC Sport Dina Asher-Smith has opened up on missing out on making the finals of the women’s 100m, finishing fifth.

‘I’m just disappointed because I’m in great shape and have been in great shape all season,’ She said.

‘I fully expected to make that final, the race wasn’t even fast.

‘I know I’m in a lot better shape than that…yeah.

‘I just go on to the 200m, but again I’m fully disappointed. I should have made that.’

The 27-year-old is getting ready to race in her semi-final of the women’s 100m.

But Neita is ready to dazzle on the world stage and as she puts it: ‘This is my time. I am not setting any limit at all on what I can do.’

Asher-Smith agonisingly misses out on a spot in the finals of the women’s 100m, placing fifth.

It means’ she will not progress to the next round.

We’re waiting on conformiation as to why she will be out but this will be sad news for the three-time Olympic gold medallist.

Right let’s turn back to the athletics now, with Team GB’s Dina Asher-Smith set to run in the next few minutes in the first women’s 100m semi-final.

She’s set to go up against some tough competition including Ivory Coasts Marie-Josée Ta Lou, Jamaica’s Shashalee Forbes and American Melissa Jefferson.

It wasn’t to be today for Team GB’s Max Whitlock who bowed out of his glittering Olympic career today finishing fourth in the men’s pommel horse competition.

Rhys McClenaghan of ireland won the competition, with defending champion Whitlock placed 0.100 off the podium.

He cut an emotional figure after the event, stating: ‘It is very raw at the moment and I would have loved for it to end in a better way here in Paris.

‘But I do not want anyone to look at the way I am feeling now and think that it is a reflection of my career, I am so proud standing here today.’

Kye Whyte has alsodelivered an update on his condition after he suffered a crash on Friday during the men’s BMX semi-finals.

He published a photo of himself wearing his Team GB uniform, with the caption: ‘Just want to say a huge thank you to everyone for the support,love,encouragement etc.

‘It meant the world but this time around I just wasn’t fast enough and when you’re not at the best of your game you get into situations which land you on the floor simple as that I’m okay I just have a massive coco on my head and a few scratches luckily, so happy to walk away healthy and not to broken from that crash. Again thank you ❤️

Team GB star Kye Whyte has reportedly been ‘diagnosed with a concussion’ after crashing his bike during the BMX racing semi-final on Friday.

Whyte, who made Olympic history in 2021 by securing Team GB’s first-ever medalin the sport, had been looking to add to his collection this summer.

But during the men’s race he appeared to lose control of his bike and fall to the floor. Paramedicswere quick to attend the British rider, before removing him from the course on a stretcher.

‘After receiving medical care from the on-site medical team at the BMX arena and team doctor Nigel Jones, Kye has been diagnosed with concussion and no other significant injuries,’ a statement from British Cycling read.

‘He will continue to be assessed under the Great Britain Cycling Team concussion protocol, led by Dr Nigel Jones.’

The world champions were seconds away from elimination against Colombia but Irene Paredes has just equalised in the seventh minute of added time.

Jenni Hermosa had earlier given Spain hope with a strike in the 79th minute after Mayra Ramirez and Leicy Santos had put Colombia 2-0 up.

The winner will progress to the semi-finals, where they will meet either France or Brazil.

The six-time Olympic medalist, who finished fourth in the pommel horse final at Paris 2024, told the BBC: ‘I feel very grateful to have been a gymnast, to have done the sport that I love since I was seven years old to now at 31.

‘It is a long stint. One of the best comments is when I have inspired young children to get into gymnastics, I have had plenty of them out here from parents saying their child has gotten into the sport after watching me and that is one of the best feelings.

‘I am done with competing but I love this sport and now I want to help to change it at grassroots level. Hopefully I can do that. That is my next mission.’

No stretchers were needed in the women’s handball game between Brazil and Angola.

Angolan Albertina Kassoma unfortunately suffered an injury.

But Brazilian player Tamires Araujo Frossard was on hand to carry her off the pitch.

He won two at London 2012, three in Rio in 2016 and another in Tokyo three years ago. But Max Whitlock will not add to his collection in Paris.

The Brit finishes fourth on 15.200 points in the men’s pommel horse final.

Gold goes to Ireland’s Rhys McClenaghan (15.533), with Kazakhstani Nariman Kurbanov (15.433) and the USA’s Stephen Nedoroscik (15.300) taking silver and bronze respectively.

Remco Evenepoel survived a scare to secure his second gold at the Paris Olympics.

Evenepoel suffered a puncture to his back wheel in the closing stages of the Olympics men’s road race but still managed to prevail after calling for another bike.

Belgian star Evenepoel previously prevailed in the time trial.

China’s Qinwen Zheng is the new Olympic champion of women’s tennis.

The 21-year-old beat Croatia’s Donna Vekic 6-2 6-3 in the final after overcoming world No 1 Iga Swiatek in the semis.

Zheng also beat Angelique Kerber, Emma Navarro, Arantxa Rus and Sara Errani on her golden run.

The USA, coached by Emma Hayes, beat Japan 1-0 after extra time, to reach the semi-finals of the women’s football event.

A nervy battle at the Parc des Princes was eventually settled by Trinity Rodman in the 115th minute.

Her next opponent will be Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng, 23.

Suwannapheng (pictured) has won both of her fights so far by a 4-1 judges’ decision.

The Thai fighter was seeded eighth for this 66kg competition, with Khelif seed No 5.

She celebrates her victory and soon-to-be status as an Olympic medalist by saluting the crowd.

Khelif is then seen shedding a tear.

For the second fight in a row, she later respectfully sits on the bottom rope to assist her opponent’s exit from the ring.

Khelif was docked a point for holding in the third and final round of the bout. But it made no difference considering how wide her lead was on the judges’ scorecards.

She is through to the semi-finals and therefore guaranteed a medal – as both losing semi-finalists receive bronze.

The Algerian is docked a point for excessive holding but she is still in total control.

Khelif is winning this fight with her jab.

Despite all the talk about her potential power in recent days, she is not known as a big hitter.

But her movement is too good for Hamori.

The first two rounds both belong to Khelif.

The first round is won 5-0 by the Algerian, who is looking much sharper.

The Algerian boxer arrives into the ring to lots of cheers and a few boos.

The Algerian Olympic Committee has lodged a formal complaint to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) concerning the treatment of their female boxer Imane Khelif.

It comes as Hungary’s boxing federation and Bulgaria’s Olympic Committee have contacted the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to object to her participation at the 2024 Games.

Khelif faced severe criticism following her victory over Angela Carini in the women’s welterweight round of 16 at the Paris Olympics, with the Italian boxer withdrawing from the bout just 46 seconds in.

We saw the pre-competition intense of an utterly determined performer earlier, there.

Imane Khalif, the Algerian athlete at the heart of an eligibility row in the women’s boxing, is fighting again today.

She is due to clash with Hungary’s Luca Anna Hamori at 4.22pm (UK time) in the 66kg quarter-finals.

Khalif has been the victim of a lot of hate and misinformation online since her controversial 46-second win over Angela Carini.

But there is a lot of love for Khalif in the North Paris Arena, which is full of Algeria flags.

Emma Hayes’ USA women’s team are going to extra time in their football quarter-final against Japan.

The US have bossed possession but not the contest overall.

It’s still 0-0 and the American fans in the crowd are getting twitchy.

Biles absolutely nails her two vaults – two and a half rotations in the pike position, a jump nobody else in the world does, writes Ian Herbert.

She’s delighted. She was smiling before she even landed the first.

Her qualifying score was 15.3. But she’s scored 15.7 and 14.9 on her first and second vaults in the final: that’s a finishing score of 15.3 which takes her into the lead by more than a full point.

Nailed on for a third gold medal here.

Chen Meng has won the women’s singles table tennis event for the second Olympics in a row.

Just as in Tokyo, she beat fellow Chinese player Sun Yingsha in the gold medal match.

Bronze went to Japan and Hina Hayata.

Interesting that the second of Biles’ two practice vaults was not convincing, writes Ian Herbert at Bercy Arena.

It’s only a warm-up but she fell backwards on landing after the complex vault which takes her name and was blowing her cheeks out as she got to her feet.

Immaterial in the broader scheme of things if she lands it when competing. She vaults fourth and the second competitor is about to go

It’s the women’s vault final next, with another huge welcome here for Simone Biles.

This is the discipline which told her that she could not compete in Tokyo and she did not appear in the final.

The gold and bronze medalists from that final – Brazilian Rebeca Andrade and Korean Seojeong Yeo – will both be competing against her here.

Luke Whitehouse finished sixth in the men’s floor final after judges downgraded his difficulty score.

Speaking after the final, Whitehouse said: ‘I mean that was probably the best floor final I’ve ever witnessed, and going up last, I had all the pressure on me, but I really enjoyed it.

‘I just came here trying to enjoy it really. I’m European champion, and I knew I was capable of being champion here but it wasn’t meant to be.’

Men’s floor champion Carlos Yulo is the first Filipino gymnast to have a podium finish in the Olympics.

The 24-year-old deserved his score of 15. He was just too good.

Jarman got bronze with 14.933. Artem Dolgopyat took silver with 14.966.

‘Jarman and winner Edriel Yulo both pulled out all the stops with the most difficult routines.

A guaranteed BRONZE at the very least for Britain in the floor final.

Jarman is in third position with only fellow Brit Luke Whitehouse to come.

The performance was not as clean as the Philippines gymnast and Jarman goes into the bronze medal position with two to perform, including British competitor Luke Whitehouse.

The difficulty levels were high but Jarman just could not find the same clean landings as the man in gold medal position.

He’s going to need that after Filipino gymnast Edriel Yulp put in a superb performance to register 15.00 and lead.

There were some famous faces in the crowd at today’s dressage final.

The music man was sat next to Martha Stewart.

Germany win the team dressage final by a tiny margin.

Just 0.121 points behind are Denmark, who get the silver.

Danish golf star Nicolai Hojgaard has completed his third round NINE under par.

He is now -11 for the tournament and currently sitting in the bronze medal position.

Only Tommy Fleetwood (-13) and Jon Rahm (-12) are ahead of Hojgaard.

Fleetwood and Rahm both have seven holes still to play in their third rounds.

Lim Si-hyeon of South Korea is the Olympic champion in the women’s individual archery event.

Lim beat compatriot Nam Su-hyeon 7-3 in the gold medal match.

It was almost a Korean 1-2-3 but Jeon Hun-young lost 6-4 to France’s Lisa Barbelin in the game for bronze.

Israeli Tom Reuveny sailor has won gold in the men’s windsurfing.

He won the final ahead of Australia’s Grae Morris and Dutchman Luuc van Opzeeland.

Israel’s Sharon Kantor had earlier claimed silver in the women’s windsurfing.

Over in the equestrian arena, Team GB are currently competing in the dressage team final.

The Brits, watched by Mail Sport’s Oliver Holt, have made a solid start and are in contention for a top podium finish.

Emma Wilson was emotional after being denied a gold medal in the windsurfing earlier and it’s hugely understandable as she couldn’t improve on the bronze she claimed last time out.

But the 25-year-old has so much to be proud of and is an inspiration to any youngsters looking to emulate her.

Nice touch from Andy making time for a fellow athlete. He didn’t have to go out of his way to present Sarah Robertson, a veteran from our bronze medal campaign in Tokyo, with her 100th cap, but he made the time for it earlier.

Louie Hinchliffe stunned us all before when he asserted dominance over world champion Noah Lyles, who is one of the favourites for the Olympic 100m this year. alongside Kishane Thompson.

With the storm that has erupted on social media, it’s worth getting our information in order about Imane Khelif ahead of her fight later:

• Algerian boxer Khelif was recognised as a female from birth and has never identified otherwise. She was not born male.
• Last year, Khelif was disqualified from the World Boxing Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) after she failed a ‘gender test’ – but the IBA would not say how or why. IBA chief Umar Kremlev cliamed it was ‘proven’ that she has male XY chromosomes.
• The International Olympic Committee does not recognise the IBA. The Olympics are satisfied that Khelif is eligible to compete as a woman.
• It has been suggested that Khelif might have a condition such as Differences of Sexual Development (DSD), though this is unconfirmed and cannot be stated as a fact. It’s a group of rare conditions involving genes, hormones and reproductive organs, including genitals.
• Khelif’s career record in amateur boxing is 37 wins and nine losses.
• She competed at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and reached the quarter-final.

The laid-back attitude of Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec has been one of the most relatable and viral moments of the Games.

Yet it turns out there’s precedent for his uber-casual approach to gunsmanship.

That precedent? Oh, himself. Of course.

She’s been a joy to watch over the years, and at the age of 37, in her fifth Olympic Games, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is back in action later in the women’s 100m semi-final. Definitely one to mark out.

Southport-born Tommy Fleetwood is a beacon of light in what has been a tragic week for the town.

He is tied in first with Spain’s Jon Rahm so far in round three of the men’s stroke play.

This peculiarity from yesterday has to be up there with one of my favourite moments from this Olympics.

Sharon Firisua – a highly respected long-distance runner from the Solomon Islands – never expected to be selected as a wildcard for the women’s 100m.

Neither did one seething sprinter specialist from her nation see it coming either.

In a controversy that has now seen one athlete threaten to quit the sport forever, Firisua put in a memorable performance. But for what reason?

Tennis and its dramatic couples, eh?

They’re always keeping us guessing.

Just weks after they split up, who thought Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac would be sharing a kiss last night? Not I, and who knows, perhaps not even they.

An incredible and audacious intervention from the International Boxing Association here.

The IBA was stripped of its recognition last year by the International Olympic Committe. That they became the first organisation to have that fate speaks about the regard they are held in.

Yet they have waded in by pledging to award Angela Carini – the Italian who forfeited to Imane Khelif inside just 46 seconds – the prize money of a champion.

The pot is stirred further ahead of Khelif’s next fight later. Recognised as a female from birth and having never identified otherwise, she must be wondering quite how this storm has ended up so large and punishing.

Huge congratulations to Emma Wilson. She’s a two-time Olympic medalist after Tokyo and now this. That’s superb.

But she will be feeling disappointed and looked gutted at the end. Wilson dominated the Opening Series and knew that she was the favourite for the final, but in the crucial moments in a difficult format today going upwind she was bested by world number 16 Italian Marta Maggetti and Israel’s Sharon Kantor.

Hear us out. It’s a question worth exploring.

British windsurfer Emma Wilson has had a day of jangling nerves. The women’s windsurfing final was meant to take place yesterday but was postponed until now, leaving her to try and stay calm.

But there are no signs of nerves here as Wilson is leading the way in the final so far. It’s a close one, though.

Anna Hester and horse Fame actually improved on GB’s first-round score, notching an impressive 76.52.

But Germany and Denmark, the two favourites for this one, both posted unassailable scores to get themselves on top in this team Grand Prix Special with a leg to go.

Great Britain are now up to 29 medals for the Games, with this piece published yesterday, but it’s still worth a gander.

What have been your favourite moments of the Olympics?

For me, it’s hard to look past Andy Murray’s comebacks, even if his tennis career ended in front of a half-empty stadium in the doubles quarterfinals with Dan Evans. His matches at the Games felt like a perfect summation of the resilience, the capacity fo the extraordinary, and the heartache that will be the defining totems of his legacy.

Unfortunately Kathleen Dawson, Angharad Evans, Keanna MacInnes, and Freya Anderson will not have the chance to compete in the final after finishing 10th overall in the heats and fifth in heat two.

Sam Sills was on the backfoot from the get-go in race 14 – or the semi-final to you and me – of the windsurfing, and he is now out of the men’s competition in Marseille.

A fantastic run to get this far and he can put himself on the back.

At least we’ve got Emma Wilson to come…

‘Olympics boss Thomas Bach made a stunning – and hugely embarrassing – error when trying to put an end to the gender row that has rocked the Games.

The German chief, 70, told reporters that the issue, which centres around the participation of two boxers who were reported to have failed a gender test last year, was ‘not a DSD case’.

Had it been accurate, Bach’s comment would have been a significant development which may well have put an end to an argument that has raged across the world.’

But the blunder has left officials rushing to clarify the mistake. Khelief will fight Luca Hamori at 4.22pm.

Sam Sills has produced a remarkable comeback today.

A last-minute overtake saw him come second in race 13. We’re now in race 14 and if he finishes in the top two then he will guarantee himself a medal.

They’re flying on the windy waters. The physicality needed to control your sailboard and the intelligence to read the conditions should not be underestimated.

Really impressive breakway from the five leaders, who are 14-and-a-half minutes ahead of the peloton, with a chase group three minutes ahead of those.

Still not a gigantic concern and no panic in the main field but it’s a nice gap to have.

Zharnel Hughes, Britain’s 100m and 200m record-holder, has insisted he has no concerns despite a recent injury and unconvincing heat performance.

‘The false start kind of threw me off a little bit but other than that I’m okay. I’m through the round,’ he told BBC Sport.

‘Unfortunately I had an injury just last month. London was the race of the season for the 100. I’m using the round to get sharper and sharper. I’m fine, I’m not worried about anything.’

Zharnel Hughes was rather languid out of the blocks and found himself in what looked like a footrace for fourth.

Yet he stepped up in the second half of the final heat and came third behind Fred Kerley and Letsile Tebogo with a time of 10.03.

No room for mistakes in what will be a stacked semi-final.

No sound there and he went too early.

Morgan Oliver, Adam Peaty, Joe Litchfield, and Matthew Richards have qualified GB for tomorrow’s final, coming second behind the USA in heat two.

Beloved home athlete Leon Marchand made it through heat one with France. He’s a big threat.

Adam Peaty has recorded a time of 59.16 in his 100m in the men’s 4x 100m medley relay. He’s back.

After losing their final pool game 3-0 to Argentina, Great Britain have been dealt a harsh hand – the Netherlands.

Memories will resurface of the 5-1 drubbing the Dutch meted out to GB in the semi-finals in Tokyo on their way to gold.

The Netherlands have won four of the last five World Cups. They are the undisputed queens of the sport.

But if you’re going to win the tournament, you generally have to beat the best. This draw is merely the advancement of a game GB would have hoped to be playing eventually. They’ll relish the challenge.

Not entirely convicing from the reigning Olympic champion.

Obviously they’re not pushing themselves all the way with the heats, but he came second in his heat and his margin over fourth was – checks notes – 0.01 second.

You can say ice in the veins but another flat performance like that and you can put his Olympic hopes on ice.

Yeah, I’m partly just saying that out of support for the Brits!

‘Today was a bit so-and-so,’ he said. ‘But it was just the heats.

Tom Pidcock is well-placed with his Team GB allies in Josh Tarling, Stephen Williams, and Fred Wright.

He’s down in 27th at the moment and was not part of an early breakway group but that’s no worries at all.

I would say it’s a marathon and not a sprint but that would misrepresent how far we have to go. We’re looking at another 213km (132 miles) until the finish line. Pidcock won’t be worried at all, but a five-minute gap isn’t great reading.

The game’s up for the Welshman. Daniel Jervis finishes bottom of his heat with a time of 15:03:75, some 23.41s behind heat three winner Daniel Wiffen.

Wiffen is on the prowl for more glory in the pool after taking gold in the men’s 880m freestyle.

After winning heat two of the men’s 100m, Louie Hinchliffe told BBC Sport: ‘It felt great but the job’s not done. I’m not going to get too ahead of myself.

‘I don’t really think too much about the time. I just try and execute my race.

‘(The Olympic experience) It’s been great to far.’

Nice work there. It’s a 9.98 from Brit Louie Hinchliffe and he finishes 0.06s ahead of heavily fancied American Noah Lyles.

Lyles, a favourite for the final, was sluggish at the start before taking the lead, but he wavered as Hinchliffe stormed through.

Jeremiah Azu claims he heard something on the line and that he was stopped from running under protest.

He told BBC Sport: ‘Honestly, I reacted to a sound. It’s a shame. The crowd are so excited and there’s a lot going on (in the crowd). It’s a shame they didn’t let me run under protest. I’m not sure what rule is being used. But they said I’ve got to go back and put an appeal in. I’m going to go through the process and see what happens.

‘I was saying I want to run under protest. Any other race they allow you to run, then after you review it. But it’s the Olympics so it’s clearly different rules.’

Jamaican Kishane Thompson – fancied by some as a successor to Usain Bolt – was slow but of the blocks but thundered through the pack and took that first heat with ease.

After the distraction of Azu, that was calm.

Huge sympathy to Jeremiah Azu as he pleads his case but the other athleets are getting tetchy. Bit of a hold-up here but eventually he departs.

A gutting moment for Team GB hopeful Jeremiah Azu who has been disqualified for a false start in the first heat of the men’s 100m.

The 23-year-old Welshman is at his first Olympics. Heart-rending, devastating, horrible moment. He goes across to protest but he’s out of the Olympic Games. He chooses not to run under protest.

The gold medals are skyward by the waterside for the men’s eight ceremony.

We’re up to fourth in the medal table now and above the United States with our ten medals to their paltry nine.

The Riders on the Storm hitmaker is out watching the riders at the dressage and you’d be forgiven for thinking he’s taking part with that clobber on.

Adam Peaty will be back in the pool this morning, Swim England have confirmed.

Harry Brightmore: ‘It was a he** of a ride at the back end of the boat. The American guys were giving it a lot of shouting on the starting line which we were ready for. We knew exactly what they were going to do. We just

executed it perfectly, a bit of a sprint to the death and we took it by the scruff of the neck. These guys, really proud of them.’

Safe progression through the heats for Anna Hopkin. The former Olympic mixed 4x100m medley relay champion is back in the water this evening.

She came joint-fourth in her heat with a time of 24.72 seconds and qualified joint-15th fastest overall.

Unlucky to the women’s hockey team who have fallen 3-0 to Argentina ahead of their quarter-final progression.

Sarah Robertson today earned her 100th cap for Team GB while Tess Howard made her combined 100th outing for GB and England.

An ideal start for Great Britain as Becky Moody atop Jagerbomb goes top in the first round with just Denmark and Germany left to run before the next two stages.

With a score of 76.489 per cent, it’s a commanding lead over the Netherlands and Belgium and one spectator has called it the best test ever done by the pair.

Cox Harry Brightmore can hardly believe his eyes. His smile at the end there was so heart-warming.

This crew has faced heartbreak in recent years, both on the water and in their personal lives, and this is a fantastic way to show the world they can rise above any challenge.

They’re looking a bit enervated after all of that. It wasn’t just 5mins and 22 seconds of their time – it was years in the making.

The demons from Tokyo are banished and Great Britain’s men’s eight crew are Olympics champions!

After the mixed emotions of third place three years ago when they had set their sights higher, they finally have that coveted gold.

An absolutely astounding row. The Dutch threw everything at Team GB in the final 200 metres, ascending to 44 strokes per minute, but it was a relentless showing from us and we go on the top step of the podium.

Netherlands second, USA third.

The back-to-back world champions just have their necks in front ahead of the Dutch after around 700 metres.

I said they were looking slightly morose after the race, but if they were, that initial reaction has dissipated as the reality has dawned on them – they’re Olympic medalists. A lifetime of chilling winter mornings vindicated.

And that’s our first medal of the day – but the crew are looking disconsolate. It was a battling run but they were aiming for gold.

Romania have been sensational in the rowing at this Olympics and after the first few hundred metres their win never felt in doubt.

Team GB are in a good position to pick off the Canadians and Romanians, sitting thid after the first 800 metres in the women’s eight final.

They need to make up a bit of ground fast, though.

Commiserations to 16-year-old Megs Havers, who has been knocked out of the last 16 of the women’s individual archery 7-1 by Lim Si-hyeon.

She was the first archer to take a set off the South Korean this Olympics and can hold her head up high.

Heidi Long has revealed that her father, who passed away last year, attended all of her races in an emotional tribute with BBC Sport.

The rower said: ‘He sadly passed away last with from a battle with cancer but he booked the accommodation for the Olympics before I knew or was going or which boat had qualified.

‘He would always go about with a smile on his face and go about everything with as much vigour as he could. He’s my inspiration.’

Nice to see Andy Murray out and about this morning in Paris – draped in a British flag with a team kit on.

He’s positioned himself at the Yves du Manoir Stadium, where Team GB’s women’s hockey squad are currently locked in battle with Argentina.

It’s the second quarter, it’s 0-0, and they’re already through. But this is no dead rubber.

Your placemrnt in the group will dictate your quarter-final opponents and everyone will be desperate to avoid the Netherlands.
