Shocking bodycam footage captured the moment a 13-year-old boy asked armed police ‘is he dead?’ as he was arrested for allegedly shooting his teacher.Â
Newly released footage showed middle school student Ryker Teel being tackled to the ground moments after allegedly opening fire outside Highland Middle School in Hobbs, New Mexico, on September 25.Â
The teenager was arrested following a brief manhunt after his teacher Kelly Matthews was found severely injured outside the school.Â
The footage showed the moment a school staffer called 911 after finding Matthews, telling a dispatcher he was bleeding profusely and had been ‘either stabbed or shot out behind the school.’Â
After a police officer jumped a fence and sprinted over to Matthews, the injured teacher was heard saying he was ambushed out of the blue and could not recall his attacker.Â
‘I don’t know, I don’t know. They were standing and facing that corner right there and I came out and they turned around and they just started firing and took off running,’ Matthews said.Â
Matthews then said the shooter was wearing some kind of mask, and gave a description of a white male in a black hoodie, black pants and long white T-shirt.Â
That description was relayed to police, and Teel was apprehended within minutes as he was spotted walking near the school.Â

Hobbs allegedly shot his teacher in a random attack, and bodycam footage showed him asking officers during his arrest: ‘Is he dead?’Â
Teacher Kelly Matthews was shot in the stomach and hip but survived the attack
The footage, first shared by KCBD, showed officers quickly surrounding Teel when they took him into custody, ordering him to get on the ground and not to run.Â
When asked his name, the baby-faced student responded, ‘Ryker Teel, sir.’
As the teenager was hauled to his feet in handcuffs, he then asked: ‘Is he dead?’Â
Teel continued: ‘I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Is he dead?’Â
When Teel was interviewed by police with his parents present, he allegedly confessed to stealing a gun from their home safe when detectives left the interview room, according to a police report.
Teel allegedly then admitted to taking the gun to school to shoot ‘anyone,’ and not specifically the man he hit, the police report said.Â
Teel is now facing charges of aggravated assault, tampering with evidence and making shooting threats.Â
Police said Matthews suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the attack, including direct hits to his stomach and hip as well as grazes from other bullets.Â

Matthews’ family said he suffered severe injuries and has been recovering in a rehab center
His daughter told KOAT at the time that he was walking between school buildings when the shooting unfolded, and said it was a random attack when he ‘came across the suspect.’
She said she was thankful her father was alive, and speculated that he could have been the first victim in a planned mass shooting that did not come to fruition.
‘Thoughts and prayers are not enough, and something has to change. I’m so tired. I mean, it could have been another Sandy Hook, and I’m so exhausted,’ Matthews’s daughter said. Â
‘I’ve got a 4-week-old baby that I’m about to send off to school one day, and reform needs to happen.’
Matthews’s family say he has left hospital and is focusing on his recovery at a rehab center.Â
Teel’s parents said in a statement via their attorney: ‘We are deeply saddened and heartbroken over the tragic event that took place at Hobbs Highland Middle School. We have and will continue to pray for the well-being and healing of the victim, his family, and the community.’Â
