Lindsay Clancy psychologist casts doubts on psychosis claim over ‘very unusual’

A psychologist that testified for the prosecution in Lindsay Clancy‘s murder trial challenged her psychosis claim on Monday.

Dr. Kirk Heilbrun, a forensic psychologist, said that Clancy’s 18-minute singular ‘auditory command hallucination’ at the time that she killed her children was one that she had never experienced before, which was ‘highly unusual’ in his expert opinion.

He told jurors that the circumstances of the events may have pointed to a serious suicide attempt where she had decided to take her children with her so they didn’t suffer without her.

Clancy, 36, is on trial for the murders of Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan, at her home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in 2023.

She strangled the children with exercise bands and then allegedly attempted to kill herself, but her efforts failed and left her paralyzed and in a wheelchair for life.

Clancy has admitted to killing her children but pleaded not guilty to murder by reason of insanity, citing postpartum psychosis, and is seeking to be committed to a state mental health facility rather than face a prison sentence.

Psychiatrist claims Clancy was not suffering from psychosis

He testified that most of the evidence he found pointed to Clancy not suffering from psychosis.

Evidence that supports idea she had psychosis:

  • It’s what she said happened when speaking to him, Dr Spinelli and Dr Resnick
  • She felt that people might know her thoughts and that police might take her children away from her

He said that he does not think the fear that people could hear thoughts was a paranoid delusion. Instead, he said that the fear her children could be taken away was somewhat rational because if she voiced her thoughts of harming the children to her doctors, it would have been escalated to DCF.

Evidence against idea she had psychosis:

  • Description of occurrence – only lasted 18 minutes, no other times
  • Time since birth of child makes it less likely to be postpartum
  • Inconsistencies in account
  • Research on malingered hallucinations

The timeframe within which she said she experienced was also unusually short, he said.

‘She only experienced the psychosis for the 18 minutes or so that she killed the children,’ Heilbrun said.

On the latest episode of The Trial USA, crime correspondent Rachel Sharp takes listeners inside Plymouth Superior Court for day fifteen of the Lindsay Clancy trial, the second day of the defense’s case.

Rachel has been covering every single day of the trial in Plymouth, Massachusetts, keeping our readers up to date with live reports and filing video roundups from the scene.

Helibrun asked Clancy if suicide was a mortal sin

Dr Heilbrun testified that the phrase Clancy said to her children when she killed them also points to altruistic filicide.

‘Go to God, baby,’ she said.

He said that was part of her expectation that she and her children would be together in heaven.

Helibrun said that she was Catholic so he had said to her ‘isn’t suicide a mortal sin?’

Reddington objected and the judge ordered a sidebar.

Last week, Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham faced backlash for asking Patrick’s mother, Sue Clancy, if she was aware that murder is a sin.

Heilbrun says Clancy’s response to Patrick on day of killings indicates she was not in psychosis

When Patrick came home and found Clancy injured in the yard, he had asked her: ‘What did you do?’

Clancy responded: ‘I tried to kill myself.’

If she was experiencing a command hallucination, Heilbrun said he would have expected her to say something more like: ‘I did what I had to do’ or ‘I did what the voice said.’

Heilbrun also cast doubts on her claim of psychosis due to other reasons, including the recovery of memories from that day.

Heilbrun discusses Clancy’s motivations for killing children

The psychiatrist said he wanted to determine Clancy’s motive for killing her children.

He said it was so ‘out of character for Lindsay Clancy’ that he wanted to find out ‘what had gone on.’

‘It seems so out of character so I thought it was very important to figure out why that happened,’ he said.

He said that this would help determine criminal responsibility.

He came up with two possible explanations for ‘the why.’

One was ‘acute psychosis with command hallucinations.’

The second possible explanation was a serious suicide attempt where she wanted to take her children with her so they didn’t suffer without her.

Heilbrun said he believes most of the evidence supports the second explanation.

Psychiatrist say Clancy’s suicide attempt was ‘very serious’

Dr Heilbrun is back on the stand and testifying about his findings after evaluating Clancy this April.

She showed a slight tendency to underreport and deny her experiences. But she did this in a way that was ‘sophisticated,’ he said. ‘She is a bright woman.’

On the MMPI – a psychological test – he found that she was not symptomatic on any areas other than the suicide and death ideation scale.

She has been on one-to-one suicide watch ever since she went to Tewksbury Hospital. That is a very long time, he said – which helped lead him to conclude that she is at serious risk of suicide.

When she filled out a suicide scale, her answers showed that January 2023 was a very serious suicide attempt.

Her description of how she was doing in January 2023 was that she was very hopeless about the future and had a feeling that something was very, very wrong with her mind, he testified.

Several jurors are writing down lots of notes in their notepads.

Court resumes

Court is back in session after the lunch break.

Clancy is now wearing a cream sweater.

The prosecution has resumed questioning Dr Kirk Heilbrun.

Who is on the Lindsay Clancy jury?

After a week long jury selection in July, 12 women and six men were seated to decide the fate of Lindsay Clancy.

They will not know until the case is sent for deliberation who is an alternate.

The judge seated 18 jurors including six alternates – a higher-than-normal number due to the length of the trial, its high-profile nature and the likely grueling testimony.

Lindsay Clancy’s life locked in psych ward

Behind the doors of the pre-Civil War psychiatric facility, the former nurse who once cared for her own patients has become the patient herself.

There, confined to a wheelchair, she receives round-the-clock care for her physical and mental health, following what her defense says was a severe episode of postpartum psychosis and depression.

What sentence is Lindsay Clancy facing?

Lindsay Clancy is on trial for the murders of her three children, Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan, at her home in Duxbury in January 2023.

She does not deny she killed them, but has pleaded not guilty and claimed she is not responsible for her actions because she was suffering postpartum psychosis after being prescribed a powerful cocktail of drugs to cope with depression.

The prosecution has argued the killings were intentional and well planned, not the work of someone who had lost control.

If convicted of murder, she faces life in prison without parole.

If found not guilty due to a lack of criminal responsibility, she would be committed to a state mental health facility.

Clancy murder trial discusses suicide

Lindsay Clancy is accused of murdering her three children – Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan – in January 2023.

Although the 36-year-old does not deny killing her children, she has pleaded not guilty and claimed she is not responsible for her actions because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.

On the day of the killings, Clancy asked her husband, Patrick Clancy, to leave their home to get takeout food and to pick up something at a pharmacy.

The former nurse strangled the children with exercise bands, then used multiple methods to try to end her own life.

She was paralyzed after falling from the home’s second-story window and is being held at a state hospital.
