Wimbledon 2025 – Day Three LIVE: Latest score and game-by-game updates as Carlos Alcaraz

That’s my four hours on this blog coming to an end but fear my colleague Tamara Prenn, the brains of the operation here at Wimbledon for the Mail, is in the hotseat for Emma Raducanu vs Marketa Vondrousova.

Can’t promise as much John Cena content, though…

Despite a staggering fight from world No 733 Oliver Tarvet, the sheer skill of Carlos Alcaraz has blown the house down with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 victory,

Tarvet held eight break point opportunities in set one but passed too many of them up and despite this not being vintage Alcaraz he was afforded the chance to make up for his mistakes.

And just like that Oliver Tarvet holds to make Carlos Alcaraz serve it out, as any ygood player should do.

If he loses in the next game so be it, this has been a phenomenal effort with his girlfriend beaming from ear to ear in his box.

Tarvet quickly finds himself in a 15-40 hole but – again – just won’t lie down.

This time he sets off scampering for a drop shot and pulls off a magnificent crosscourt dropshot winner to halve the deficit.

But despite Alcaraz falling onto his backside on the very next point, Tarvet miscues and goes far beyond the baseline.

Alcaraz is now a game away.

That serves me right for laughing at funny tweets.

Carlos Alcaraz has just responded to being broken by immediately breaking back. No fun, Carlitos.

I interrupt match action updates because this made me chuckle… a lot.

I absolutely love the Tarvet spirit. He just refuses to roll over and give up.

Alcaraz toys with him for the opening point of this game but is soon hit for three of his own to set up two break points.

The first is saved with a serve out wide that may be Alcaraz’s best of the match but the second cannot be salvaged by the Spaniard who lazily springs a forehand long.

An unlucky net cord sees the ball spring up kindly for Alcaraz to smash a winner overhead to force deuce and there is some heavy breathing now from Tarvet (understandable after such a solid fight).

And just like that a forehand winner allows Alcaraz to break. That’s a blow for Tarvet.

Alcaraz holds with some lovely set-up shots just then. No crazy celebration. He knows he’s closing in but Tarvet won’t just give him victory.

He’s going to have to take it.

A colleague briefly distracted me all while refuses to go away against Alcaraz by taking another game.

We’ve been playing 1hr46 and I’d argue Tarvet has been competitive in all but one game across these three sets so far. Staggering effort.

This crowd roars after an 18-shot rally is capped off with a bullet of a forehand winner from Tarvet to get his nose in front against the Alcaraz serve.

Alcaraz is very popular in these parts and so it’s new territory for him to be the second most popular man on court.

Three quick serve and winner points and it’s 15-40 in Alcaraz’s favour and the Spaniard is edging closer, albeit having to work very hard for this.

That looked set to be the worst possible start to the third set for Tarvet as he found himself in a 15-40 hole.

An unforced error from Alcaraz saved the first of two break points and the second was swatted away with the help of an unreturnable serve down the T.

He passes up a game point when he gets underneath a routine forehand and it loops beyond the baseline.

Helping hands from Alcaraz go a long way and a rogue backhand dropshot that was never on sails wide to set up another game point. That one goes begging after a forehand winner from Alcaraz forces a third deuce.

But two quick points and another Alcaraz mistake and he’s off and running in set three.

Starting with a double fault won’t have been how Carlos Alcaraz planned it but the world No 2 is now within a set of round three.

One of the shots of the tournament to open this game as Carlos Alcaraz pulls out a pirouette backhand winner at the net. Glorious. 0-15.

A brilliant forehand return of serve doesn’t come back from Tarvet and this is a bad time to lose the grip of the set.

It’s 0-40 when a rather tepid backhand sails wide right and Alcaraz is putting his foot on the accelerator now.

The very worst possible time to be broken as a backhand crosscourt hits the line and catches Tarvet out before he can react quick enough to fire it back.

I was about to announce the first hold-to-love for Alcaraz before he plundered a forehand into the foot of the net at 40-0.

He soon wraps up the game and that was the easiest hold of the match so far.

Alcaraz must barely believe this isn’t a top 20 player on the other side of the net.

I actually don’t think Alcaraz has had one ‘easy’ game here, either a hold on his own serve or a break of serve.

Tarvet is a complete nuisance to his usual rhythm and he appears to have calculated when to be aggressive and rush the net, getting his rewards with a volleyed winner for 15-0.

Every point won by Alcaraz is now met with a fistpump and a forehand winner that catches Tarvet on the backfoot is the latest he celebrates. 15-15.

This time Alcaraz wants to rush the net but Tarvet, standing deep behind the baseline, unloads his artillery by shelling a forehand winner beyond the outstretched racket of Alcaraz. Centre Court erupts. 30-15.

A quick exchange of two cheap points drags us to 40-30 before a crosscourt drop shot winner from Tarvet is *chef’s kiss*

John Cena and Roy Hodgson must be loving this.

An unreturnable serve down the T gets a fistpump from Alcaraz as he gets his nose in front.

But an unforced error – his 10th so far – opens the door at 15-15 for Tarvet.

A serve into the body discombobulates Tarvet though and his parried return is tame and floats into the net for 15-30.

Tarvet then senses he has the upper hand in a rally, rushes in on the forehand side of the court but gets over excited and hooks a forehand long. 15-40

Aggressive tennis is Tarvet’s MO and he makes it 30-40 by rushing in and forcing a tame backhand by Alcaraz into the net.

But a backhand winner down the line is just too powerful. Game Alcaraz.

What a point to start the fifth game. Alcaraz is dictating the rally from the back of the court with little movement or stress before he just cannons a forehand off his racket that never gave Tarvet a chance.

The Brit draws himself level impressively at 15-15, before delivering a pinpoit serve down the T that flicked up a speck of dust on the line for 30-15.

Alcaraz miscues a return off a Tarvet second serve, uncharacteristically I should say, to make it 40-15 and the game is converted when an onrushing Alcaraz attempts to produce a drop shot at the net but fails and instead finds the top of it.

All square in set two, where the most interesting moment arrived when a steward had to go and collect a loose ball off a fan who thought she probably had a memento from the visit. Alas…

Let’s hear from my colleague DAVID COVERDALE who was on No 1 Court to see Cameron Norrie defeat Frances Tiafoe…

An understated celebration from Norrie but that is a significant win. He reached the semis here in 2022 and is on the march again. Norrie is just the sixth British man in the Open era to reach the third round four times.

Norrie just loves it on No1 Court. He beat Jack Draper on here last year and enjoyed three of his five wins on it in 2022

I was really happy when I saw the schedule and that I was on Court 1,’ he said. ‘It’s my favourite court and an amazing atmosphere’

Easy to get a little bit giddy and some lapses in concentration here set up three break points for Alcaraz to immediately respond.

And the first of those is converted with a returned backhand down the line from a fairly tame serve.

What I love about Oliver Tarvet is he’s just swinging for the fences here.

He gets himself another break point opportunity and so many of these are because once he has neutralised the Alcaraz serve the Spaniard is stressed into shots he doesn’t want to be making.

A vicious forehand is returned long by Alcaraz and TARVET BREAKS.

A fun first set in Alcaraz-Tarvet. Credit to the latter for break points in three of the games.

All eyes currently drawn to Thomas Tuchel in conversation with Roy Hodgson, who presumably would prefer Tarvet to keep it tighter at the back.

After racing out to a 40-0 lead the fearless Tarvet plunders his next two shots into the net to open the door to Alcaraz which, if he asked for my opinion, is not a great tactic.

But a brilliant bullet of a serve on the line gives Alcaraz no chance of returning and the Brit is on the board in set two!

Oliver Tarvet had eight break point opportunities in that set.

Got to start converting or this match may go on to haunt him.

Oliver Tarvet has played well – forget his ranking, he’s barely done much wrong here – and yet he’s just found himself losing the first set 6-1.

He managed to drga himself back into this game, successfully returning an Alcaraz drop shot at 30-40 to again force deuce, a theme of this first set.

Tarvet then wins a huge roar of support from the crowd with a crosscourt drop shot winner to go up A-40 after another Alcaraz drop shot is read by the Brit.

That break point is quickly snuffed out but Tarvet is like a dog with a bone on every point and he’s squeezing errors out of Alcaraz in this near six-minute game.

A second break point after Tarvet’s tweener following a lob shot was easily converted with an overhead volley from Alcaraz, while a third break point some came and went.

An unreturnable serve from Alcaraz puts him in front and he backs that up thanks to a Tarvet unforced error.

A brutal, brutal sport at times.

This has been Tarvet’s weakest so far as frustration kicks in and an arrow sent down the line on Alcaraz’s backhand side is badly miscued to set up two break points.

Alcaraz thought he had converted the first one with a vicious forehand that was millimetres from connecting with the line.

The second saw Alcaraz hunting like a shark in water as Tarvet’s second serve was easily returned and the Spaniard rushed in to hurry his opponent to convert a winner for a double break.

Against so many players this level from Tarvet would get the job done… but he’s up against one of the current greats.

The British No 3 is into round three after knocking out Frances Tiafoe. Big win that.

Norrie 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-5 Tiafoe

This is WELL worth the price of admission!

Alcaraz cannot settle here as Tarvet is in every single point and a miscued shot to Tarvet’s forehand side goes wide to set up two break points.

A monster serve saves the first of those, and a mini celebration of relief from Alcaraz is on show, before the second is saved courtesy of a shanked forehand down the line by Tarvet, whose eyes lit up at seeing so much space behind an onrushing Alcaraz.

Tarvet slipped on a kickserve return wide to his forehand side and he cannot recover quick enough to meet the return into the open court to hand advantage to Alcaraz and a netted backhand return moments later seals the game.

The Alcaraz backhand looks like his most reliable shot right now and he starts game four with a sliced backhand crosscourt and by taking all the pace out of the shot Tarvet can only try and hook one into the net. 0-15.

A ‘close call’ winner gets him back on the board at 15-15 before a brilliant serve down the T is returned into the net tamely by Alcaraz for 30-15, cue a fistpump to his box.

Again, the Alcaraz backhand is hard for Tarvet to combat and after a short rally the Spaniard unleashes one that Tarvet is at full stretch to connect with, sending it long. 30-30.

Alcaraz then tries to catch Tarvet out with another of those drop shots but the Brit has some speed in his shoes this time to respond with a drop shot of his own before firing a volley into the open court after Alcaraz sent it back in his direction. 40-30.

A huge roar when Alcaraz fires long on the following point. He’s on the board against the world No 2!

It’s amazing how quick a set can seemingly get away from you.

Tarvet has been firmly in every single game and yet he’s played three and lost three.

This time a double fault from Alcaraz sets up a deuce and Alcaraz’s serving woes continue as he seemingly cannot find his first serve.

Tarvet lets him off, though, as a crosscourt backhand cannons into the middle of the net to tee up advantage for the Spaniard.

A fabulous rally ensues with Tarvet whiskers away from a winner with a flying backhand but the longer these rallies goes on the more emboldened Alcaraz becomes and an unforced error into the net seals game three.

It’s a costly double fault by Tarvet that puts him in a 15-30 hole on his first service game, just a nod to some nerves.

Alcaraz turns the screw to set up two break points with a clever crosscourt drop shot that while Tarvet meets it, scoops it just long of the baseline.

The first of those break points is saved with a swift serve and volley on the backhand down the line.

But the second shows the power of Alcaraz after his crosscourt backhand, hit with serious venom, is unreturnable for Tarvet.

A forehand winner to Tarvet’s forehand side prevents a third break point from being converted by the world No 773 but what a treat we have in store if this is how it is to play out.

Clever court awareness from Alcaraz allows him to catch Tarvet cold with a deft drop shot to go up advantage in deuce.

He then closes out a very tricky opening game with a diving crosscourt volley at the net. A hold… but a sign for Tarvet that he can compete.

What a start from Tarvet!

He sets up his first break point of the match at 40-30 after an overcooked Alcaraz forehand from the baseline but the sign of a great champion is digging in when the going gets tough.

The Spaniard produced a forehand winner to force deuce but Tarvet’s mentality is super and he gets a second bite at break point after another rare Alcaraz error.

This time a backhand goes just long of the baseline and Tarvet looks to the heavens at another opportunity missed.

ECB chairman Richard Thompson has been drawn to Wimbledon over England’s test against India at Edgbaston today.

But what a treat he is in store for along with the rest of a star-studded Royal Box.

Alcaraz vs Tarvet – which would be one of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon history if Tarvet pulls it off – is about to start…

Some insight here from my colleague MATTHEW LAMBWELL on the order of play for Thursday…

The order of play is out for the two big courts tomorrow and again there is something of a snub for Jack Draper, who remains on No1 Court.

Novak Djokovic v Dan Evans is an obvious choice on Centre but the second men’s match, bafflingly, is Jannik Sinner against Aussie journeyman Aleksandar Vukic. Surely the punters with the best ticket in the house would have rather seen the British No1 against former finalist Marin Cilic?

A victorious world No 1 has just spoken on court after defeating Marie Bouzkova…

We’ve played a lot of close matches so I’m pleased to be through this difficult round.

That was a tough moment of the match [going a break down late in the first set]. I was just trying to put the ball back on that side and hope I could break back. Until that point, my serve wasn’t good enough to break.

But I was able to break and I felt a little bit better at that moment, which is why I think I was able to win the tie-break and win in straight sets.

And that is that for Marie Bouzkova as world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka bulldozes her way into round three with a 7-6, 6-4 win.

Not long to wait now until Oliver Tarvet walks out for the match of his life against Carlos Alcaraz…

The British No 3 is celebrating – again – after taking the third set 6-3 against Frances Tiafoe.

Cameron Norrie is now a set away from round three… but it’s not over yet.

More and more tennis players – and fans for that matter – are becoming increasingly fashionable (I can attest having walked around the grounds and find myself in awe of many, many people).

So, on this train of thought, I thought I’d flag that British star Katie Boulter has teamed up with Amex for a one-off Wimbledon showcase.

Court 12 has turned into the Maracana as Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca saves two set points.

Plenty of football-style chanting from fans in yellow Brazil tops. Their man still leads by a set with the second heading towards a potential tie-break

British No 3 Cameron Norrie has just punched the air in celebration after clinching the second set against US hotshot Frances Tiafoe.

He looked to be heading to a two-set deficit but rallied back and we have ourselves a ball game folks.

Tiafoe is an extremely tricky customer in round two, but so is Norrie and roared on by a partisan home crowd on No 1 Court, he’s got a foothold.

Norrie 4-6, 6-4 Tiafoe after two sets.

Centre Court crowd are eagerly awaiting the matches involving Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu but I have to say the opening match between Aryna Sabalenka and Maria Bouzkova is proving far more problematic for the world No 1 than first anticipated.

She is currently locked on serve in a first set tie-break.

That one is currently 2-2 in the tiebreak after winning six games apiece.

If John Cena sees this blog… hello.

Kartal has done it and in the process has guaranteed herself £152,000.

Not a bad start to the week…

Let’s bring you some latest scores while we wait for the main events.

A fairly slow burn out on Centre while it’s a mixed bag for the Brits with Cameron Norrie struggling to find a groove versus the ever tricky Frances Tiafoe.

But look at Sonny Kartal go! The Brit is flying against Viktoriya Tomova.

Olivia Rodrigo is incredibly excited to meet John Cena.

I have to say, today’s Royal Box on Centre Court is a real treat.

American music sensation Olivia Rodrigo is here while Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra have made the jaunt.
