Distressing Lindsay Clancy closing argument brings juror to tears: Live updates

The jury in Lindsay Clancy‘s murder trial have begun deliberations after hearing closing arguments from the prosecution and the defense following five grueling weeks of evidence.

The jurors, who were chosen from a group of 18 and are non-sequestered, are made up of nine women and three men, with a female jury foreperson.

They were chosen by random ballot on Thursday afternoon, with six alternates also selected.

Earlier in the day, prosecutors emphatically declared that Clancy was guilty in their closing remarks.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague said that the nurse mother left her children ‘discarded on the basement floor like toys’ and she was indifferent to their pain and suffering, leaving one juror in tears.

Defense lawyer Kevin Reddington, in contrast, begged the jury to show the former nurse mercy, adding that she was unmistakably ‘a damn good mother.’

‘This is a prosecution that has ripped the soul out of this girl,’ he said. Clancy sobbed as Reddington brought up her three children, saying that they were ‘the victims in this case.’

Prosecutors are seeking to convict Clancy on first-degree murder charges. However, Judge William R Sullivan allowed manslaughter to be added to the jury instructions alongside second-degree murder yesterday.

Clancy, 36, strangled her children Cora, five, Dawson, three, and Callan, eight months, to death at her home Duxbury, Massachusetts in January 2023.

Clancy has admitted to killing her children but pleaded not guilty to murder by reason of insanity, citing postpartum psychosis, and is seeking to be committed to a state mental health facility rather than face a prison sentence.

Lindsay Clancy jury chosen

The Lindsay Clancy jury was whittled down from 18 to 12.

After a weeklong selection in July, 12 women and six men were seated to decide the killer’s fate.

On Thursday, following closing arguments, the judge selected one of the women as the foreperson on the jury.

Then the six alternates were chosen at random.

The remaining jurors, including eight women and three men, were selected to deliberate Clancy’s verdict.

‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more dedicated group of jurors in any trial that I’ve ever been involved in,’ Judge Sullivan said.

The jury has not been sequestered, but the judge has advised them not to discuss the case outside the jury room.

Who is Patrick Clancy’s new wife Rachel Danis?

Photos of Patrick Clancy with Rachel Danis, 37, first surfaced online the in February 2024, and the Clancy family’s former home in Duxbury sold in May.

Rachel, a fertility doctor, later moved into Patrick’s Midtown Manhattan apartment, and by late last year she was photographed wearing what appeared to be an engagement ring.

The pair married in April in a small ceremony at the famous Ladies Pavilion overlooking the lake in Central Park, followed by a celebration at nearby Sarabeth’s restaurant.

Yet the newlyweds have found no real refuge from the fallout of Lindsay’s trial, even far away in New York City.

A groundswell of online sympathy for Lindsay has fueled accusations from strangers that Patrick somehow failed his ex-wife.

Kevin Reddington says Lindsay Clancy was a ‘damn good mother’ who ‘did nothing wrong’ before kids’ deaths in emotional closing arguments

Lindsay Clancy’s defense attorney described her as a ‘damn good mother’ who did ‘nothing wrong’ before she strangled her children to death during emotional closing arguments.

Kevin Reddington spoke to the jury for about 50 minutes on Thursday morning before the prosecution did the same. The 12 jurors will then be sent out to deliberate.

Clancy, 36, has admitted to killing her children but pleaded not guilty to murder by reason of insanity, citing postpartum psychosis, and is seeking to be committed to a state mental health facility rather than face a prison sentence.

Reddington vehemently defended his client throughout the trial, but further emphasized his belief during his closing statement.

The Lindsay Clancy murder trial has horrified America. It’s time for someone to say what no one else will about her husband Patrick: KENNEDY

Three innocent children were needlessly slaughtered.

People are furious. Disgusted. Demanding justice.

It’s natural for them to look for someone – anyone, perhaps – to blame.

Lindsay Clancy, 36, is enduring the absolute freaking horror show of her murder trial. She’s the one, according to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, that is responsible for her children’s deaths.

She’s pleaded not guilty on an insanity defense. Her team say she’s a victim here, too: allegedly overmedicated and undertreated by a negligent healthcare system that plopped her on the prescription drug treadmill and said run.

I fear ‘disaster’ Lindsay Clancy verdict that no one saw coming

The Lindsay Clancy trial, an unfathomable story of family, murder and alleged postpartum psychosis, has played out in a Massachusetts courtroom and held a global audience in thrall over the last six and a half weeks.

Clancy, who once spent her summers vacationing on Cape Cod with her husband and three young children, has spent much of this July and August in a courtroom, standing trial for the first-degree murder of her five-year-old daughter Cora, three-year-old son Dawson and eight-month-old son Callan.

What happened to the Clancy children?

On January 24, 2023, Clancy announced she’d had an exhausting day looking after their three young children so she asked husband Patrick if he didn’t mind going out on an errand. He just needed to pick up some children’s medicine and a takeout dinner order as she’d been too tired to cook, she told him.

Patrick, 36, who worked in software sales for Microsoft, was happy to oblige. But when he returned to their home in the well-to-do Boston coastal suburb of Duxbury less than an hour later at around 6pm, he discovered that their happy family existence had been snuffed out in an act of almost unimaginable violence.

After going upstairs to find his wife, who he imagined was giving the children a bath, he discovered their second-floor bedroom door was locked and had to force his way in. Inside, there was blood on the floor, a bloody knife on the nightstand and the room was chilly as a window had been left open.

He ran downstairs to find his wife lying barely conscious outside. She had cut her wrists and neck before jumping out of the window, falling some 20ft onto frozen ground. She told him she’d tried to kill herself, adding – when he asked – that the children were in the basement.

Patrick stayed by her side for the next 10 minutes after dialing 911, convinced that she might die before the paramedics arrived.

Only when they turned up did he hurry inside to find the children – five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and Callan, just eight months. They were indeed in the basement – they had all been strangled with resistance bands.

Last week I said the unthinkable to my seven-month-old daughter. As we await Lindsay Clancy trial verdict… I have a confession that so many other mothers will judge: ANNABEL FENWICK ELLIOTT

‘I hate you,’ I hissed at my seven-month-old daughter in the early hours of the morning last week. And then again through my tears, with extra emphasis: ‘I hate you.’

Nothing could be further from the truth, of course. I would leap through flames for my much-wanted baby. And I never would have said those words out loud if she’d been old enough to understand them.

But I’d been up most of the night with a dreadful cold, and it was the fifth time I’d rocked her back to sleep, only for her eyes to ping open the moment I laid her down. In that moment, my frustration felt a lot like hate.

So, as I watch the trial of Lindsay Clancy, like so many other mothers across the world who are gripped by it, I can’t help but feel a pang of empathy.

Patrick and Lindsay Clancy are suing her medical providers

Both Patrick and Lindsay Clancy have filed separate lawsuits against several of her medical providers alleging that they overmedicated the mom while treating her for postpartum mental health issues.

This overmedication led to her conditions worsening, and ultimately to the deaths of the children, the suits claim.

Many of the providers they are suing took the stand during her murder trial, including Dr Jennifer Tufts and Nurse Rebecca Jollotta.

The civil suits are still making their way through the courts.
