Female British tourist, 74, is run over and killed by a bus in Lanzarote

A 74-year-old British tourist has died after being run over by a bus on the holiday island of Lanzarote.

The unnamed woman was rushed to hospital in a ‘critical’ condition after being hit by the vehicle in the popular resort of Costa Teguise and stabilised at the scene.

Officials confirmed today she had died at Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in the island capital Arrecife.

The dead woman has not been named. Police confirmed she was a 74-year-old British national.

The tragic accident happened just after 9am on Wednesday. She is believed to have lost her fight for life later the same day although officials have not clarified the exact time of death.

A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency coordination centre said before it emerged the British woman had died: ‘A woman run over by a bus in Lanzarote has been taken to Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital with serious multiple injuries.

‘The first alert was received at 9.08am on Wednesday, saying a traffic accident had occurred in the municipality of Teguise and a person had been injured.’

Local reports said some witnesses had told investigators the driver of the bus, owned by a private firm but providing a public transportation service, had been travelling ‘too fast’ but there has been no official confirmation of this claim or about the exact circumstances of the accident.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by police employed by Teguise Town Hall, who will submit a report to an investigating magistrate.

The bus driver, who has not been arrested, will be questioned as part of the probe.

His vehicle is also expected to be examined to rule out any possible mechanical faults.
